Baseball is easily the most competitive sports of all kinds. This is probably why it is so dear a sport in America, even to the point of it's "National Pastime." In America, we like to be competitive - even when we are trying to have fun. Baseball is much more competitive than any other sport. It is a sport that is much more dependent on team play and participation than any other. Baseball requires a very good level of skill and extraordinary eye-hand coordination, far more than any other sport.
One of the most competitive aspect of baseball is the way it is structured. Baseball is structured in a way that the entire team should play, and can not rely on being carried by a player. In defense, the ball can be hit anywhere at any time. Just because the second baseman, for example, is a great player does not help when the ball is hit in the outfield or third baseman. Just because the number of "Your four Hitter can hit monster home runs does not help when the other eight batters are coming up to the plate.
In baseball, everyone has to play.
Another important point to make is that no team is ever "out of it." At any point a team can rally and come back from behind, or a team can be prevented. The game is not over until its over is a very true statement. Unlike the other sports, baseball is not controlled by the clock. This means that if a team starts a rally, the rally will continue until stopped hitting the ball. They will not be stopped by outside forces. In basketball or football, for example, time is ticking out - and night for the entire game, and time to play any individual or group of plays, and that puts an end to any rally that would fall short because lack of time. Baseball, however, gives everyone a chance. If you are competitive, and if you drive to win, baseball gives you that opportunity. Baseball has not cut you off the clock and external forces. Baseball gives you the opportunity to compete.
The opposing team can not only hold the ball, take a knee, run out of time or otherwise not stop you playing. In baseball, if you want to win, you have to play offense and defense, and you must play the entire game. This competitive drive is really what makes baseball a great sport.
