Life after sport - Prevention Plans

Retirement before 40 or even 30 years. The dream for many, but a hard reality for most athletes. It is possible that body and mind go far in sports career and again faces the new challenge athlete. What now?

The reason for ceasing to be a natural end of a long career and remuneration or it may be premature with the athlete expelled due to injury, the selection or financial reasons. Whatever the reason, change is on the athlete must go through to adapt to new lifestyles. It took me three times before getting out of the sport.

The first time my retirement because my goal is playing in the Olympics and I thought was nothing more to do in sports. The second time I retired I thought I was getting old (37 years) and I have to take care of my back (screw taken together since '92). I kept going until the sport because he loved what I was good. When I gave up a third time at age 41, it was for good - I had a new passion and new goals to finally convince me to store the swimsuit competition for good.

Every athlete who own reasons to retire, return, or even stay in the sport. I think it is important for people to encourage their wisdom to see - it is positive and they want to do something, or is the pain stimulus, junk out of state, such as lack of success beyond sports. Positive understanding inevitable move towards encouraging more produces encouraging results.

Problems can be assessed and self-help difficulties. A sports career produced many prizes and regular reviews are not present in normal non-athletes.

When research is the first I have my own retirement in 2000, Beach Volleyball, I interviewed several athletes in Western Australia, where I was based in once. Represents another retired player she lost "the commitment of everyday things and improve the reminder always create a positive driving force"

Many athletes agree that making the new target or focus to facilitate the transition. Both confusing decision to retire and what to do other obstacle in the process. Individual circumstances to determine the response retirement. Everyone seems to go through a state of confusion and need to accept that in the framework of the process. Even those not yet ready downturn hit. The transition does not occur quickly, and can be a shock for the athletes, and maybe they will need training in the process.

The uncertainty about the future of the sometimes obvious lack of respect for the athlete and quality of relevant work experience. However, it is important to note here that many qualities and skills to participate in sport at a high level professional. They must identify and then "sold" to prospective employer.

Retired due to injury creates more problems to deal with and extends the process. Many still looking back at the past, and the idea of lost opportunities and I think "I could ..." Request from staff can also select problems. Some athletes retire delay in this case, to achieve their dreams, but more pain to come.

Support is essential for progress. This support may come from family and friends, or he could retire from professional assistance, advice, career guidance, or even coach. Athletes and coaches adjust to their sport, so why not continue to have a coach in the area to help keep life on track, motivated and working towards new goals.

In addition to new goals and coach, I think the important key to successful transfer of identity. When I learned more about the state of mind, I thought my identity was wrapped up in being an athlete and as long as it remained, still I floated back to my sport. When I learned to define themselves as something new - business and entrepreneur, it was easy to change my actions, my results, and therefore my life. What can the new identity of the athlete to take to ensure success for the new route?

Annette Huygens Tholen understands the challenges of sport retirement.
